Conium maculatum contains piperidine alkaloids: coniine, γ-coniceine (most toxic), N-methylconiine, conhydrine, pseudoconhydrine. γ-Coniceine oral LD₅₀ ~12 mg/kg in mice (5–50 mg/kg range → T=4 baseline). Human estimated lethal dose: 150–300 mg coniine (Nunes et al., Cureus, 2025). Clinical course: ascending neuromuscular paralysis → respiratory arrest within 2–3 h. Vital Precaution Principle applied: Karakasi et al. (Forensic Science Review 31(1):23–36, 2019 — Democritus University of Thrace & Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, EU member state) document three C. maculatum intoxication incidents, one with fatal outcome.
A = 4. Lethal to cattle and horses documented in European veterinary literature. Coniine and γ-coniceine block nicotinic acetylcholine receptors → neuromuscular blockade → respiratory failure. Binev R et al. document intoxication with C. maculatum in 38 calves including 3 fatal outcomes — direct species-specific evidence of livestock lethality. López TA et al. (Toxicon 37:841–865, 1999) provide comprehensive review of acute and chronic toxicity in cattle and horses across the European context. Poisoning typically via contaminated hay or silage.
